VIVRE LA MORT

Dying is part of life. We all know that. But there seems to be little room in our minds, in our society, for this reality. Individually and collectively, we seem to have lost our bearings. And when death occurs, we are left with a feeling of helplessness. We are not prepared; we have few, if any, tools to make sense of these experiences.

The Vivre la mort project focuses on dying, death, and grief as universal human phenomena filled with life.

Over the next three years, we will create works of art, spaces for awareness, dialogue, and social mobilization with the intention of provoking moments to raise awareness, inform, and give meaning. Together, we will imagine ways for us to experience death. In this way, we will be able to mobilize and regain the power to act in the face of these realities.

CONTINUITY AND COHERENCE

The Vivre la mort project is a continuation of the HABITATS movement launched by Un et un font mille.  In this sense, Vivre la mort aims to be a citizen movement at the crossroads of the performing arts and social innovation that contributes to individual and collective mobilization.

We will create spaces for active exchange, creation, and citizen involvement, where people from all walks of life and all generations will take concrete action to promote existing solutions and, together, create new ones.

Thus, in the face of persistent taboos and the isolation often experienced at these pivotal moments, we want to activate the power of collective action to transform our relationship with death and better support those who are going through it.

THE OBJECTIVES OF VIVRE LA MORT

  • To create living works of art and spaces for social innovation in order to: break the silence and taboo surrounding death, encourage collective action, and develop sensitive solutions and tools for dealing with the realities of dying, death, and grief.

  • Equip communities with public events, workshop spaces, and concrete resources to better navigate these transitions on an individual and collective level. This is achieved by drawing on the knowledge and expertise developed through the deployment of our HABITATS project over the past six years.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE NEXT
THREE YEARS

ARTISTIC CREATIONS

Three original multidisciplinary creations will be presented in several regions of Quebec. These creations will combine performances and moments of mediation with participants.

FONTAINE DE JOUVENCE – 2026

An audio-guided walking tour presented in public spaces, exploring the realities of grief through the themes of aging and death.

Through its performances, which will take place in different territories, Fontaine de jouvence asks the question: why do we refuse to age and die?

Following the performances, through moments of mediation with the communities that live there, we want to activate the collective intelligence of the participants. All this, in partnership with the municipalities and organizations involved.

L’ESPACE M’EST APPARU– 2027

A work combining dance and theatrical performance currently in development, which explores the sensitive dimensions of grief through the experience of the death of the parents of founders Gilles and Alice.

Ten performances are planned in two cities in 2027, and in ten other locations the following year. We intend to develop a similar production model that combines performances and mediation, in line with our intention to make art a vehicle for social change.

CITIZEN SPACES

Grief: an invitation – In-person workshop spaces

These meetings will allow us to experience a structured space that brings together bereaved individuals, as well as professionals from the fields of support, research, and fieldwork.

They will allow us to challenge our preconceived ideas, create spaces of freedom guided by the body, and imagine new ways of dealing with the realities of grief, end of life, and death.

VIVRE LA MORT - Public events  - virtual

These virtual lunchtime meetings will allow us to learn, co-create, dialogue, and raise awareness. They will enable us to engage in dialogue with stakeholders from all disciplines—citizens, artists, researchers, health professionals, community leaders, etc.—in relation to the themes of the cycle.

La Nuit de la mémoire – Public Space Activity - First edition in 2027

A collective event to raise awareness and visibility of the realities of death, inspired by different cultural traditions, in collaboration with these different communities.

Inspired by these traditions, this activity, with its air of lucid celebration, will invite us to renew our individual and collective view of death by celebrating the memory of our dead, while considering the vital force of knowing that we will one day die.

Multiplicateur d’impacts – Research process

Building on our experience, our achievements, and the partnerships we have forged through the deployment of HABITATS and the activities of Vivre la mort, we want to create a body of concrete tools and practices that can be transferred to communities, which will be able to use our tools to renew citizen mobilization in their communities in response to the issues that concern them.

This is a new step in our intention to transfer tools for transforming communities and societies and to strengthen community mobilization by transposing processes at the heart of artistic creation to make them vectors of social change.
